Dr. Michael G. Shoaf

Hired by the Painesville Township Board of Education in 1996, Dr. Michael Shoaf was an assistant principal at Riverside High School and then was given the additional responsibility of athletic director the following year. In 1998, Dr. Shoaf became the associate principal of John R. Williams Junior High School. Following the associate principalship, Dr. Shoaf served as principal of Riverside High School, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, and superintendent. Dr. Shoaf was an administrator for the Painesville Township Local School District for eleven years.

District earned an Excellent rating from the Ohio Department of Education in 2005, 2004, 2003 and 2001 under Dr. Shoaf’s tenure as assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction and superintendent.
As the Director of Federal Programs, Dr. Shoaf was able to designate Title I funding that supported two excellent on-going professional development programs: The Literacy Specialist Program, which had the primary goal of providing opportunities for faculty members to become well versed in core curriculum reading instruction practices, and The Teachers Teaching Teachers Program, which provided an opportunity for faculty members to share best practices. Additionally, Dr. Shoaf introduced the Character Counts! Program sponsored by the Josephson Institute of Ethics and an Anti-Bullying and Diversity Program instructed by The Diversity Center during his tenure as superintendent.
Community meetings, known as the State of the Schools, were introduced by Dr. Shoaf to provide an opportunity for informative engagement and dialogue about the school system and related programs. In an effort to be active and involved in building activities by sharing successes and concerns with students, Dr. Shoaf hosted Students-Superintendent Luncheons. Furthermore, Dr. Shoaf is the past President of the Painesville Exchange Club, a former Trustee for the Painesville Township Excellence for Education Foundation (PTEEF), a past member of the Athletic Boosters, and a lifetime member of the Riverside High School Alumni Association.
Dr. Shoaf earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education and a Master of Arts Degree in Educational Policy and Leadership from The Ohio State University, an Educational Specialist Degree in Educational Leadership from Kent State University, and a Doctorate Degree in Education from Youngstown State University. His research has been included in several distinguished publications and he has been recognized as a keynote speaker in the area of K-12 education.
Since leaving the Painesville Township Schools, Dr. Shoaf has assumed the responsibility of Superintendent for the Rocky River City School District. He and his wife, Lisa, reside in Rocky River and have two children, Michael (age 7) and Madeleine (age 3).
